In 1968, the Regional Museum became the Ceramics Museum in Bolesławiec. The change was inspired by Maria Starzewska, director of the Silesian Museum in Wrocław, who had earlier helped prepare the Bolesławiec exhibition.
The statute of 9 December 1968 defined three areas of collecting. One covered the history of Bolesławiec and its surrounding region: the new name did not mean abandoning the city's and region's past.
A second area was the development of Bolesławiec ceramics. The third was contemporary ceramic sculpture made by artists taking part in local artist residencies. The collection therefore included both historic wares and works arising from the city's contemporary artistic life.
The museum's present mission places local ceramic history within the broader history of European ceramics. It also covers collecting, public access and long-term preservation, as well as sharing knowledge of the region's culture and contemporary life.
