L’oggetto

The apothecary's study is a reconstructed interior with equipment used up to the 19th century. Its apparatus introduces the work involved in making a medicine before the finished preparation reached the person who needed it. Devices include tablet presses and pill-making tools, used to give medicines a particular form, as well as alembics: apparatus for distillation.

Metal and ceramic mortars represent grinding tools. They are accompanied by quart measures and balances. The latter come in several varieties: handheld, drawer and cabinet balances. Comparing these constructions shows weighing as a distinct part of pharmacy work, supported by its own implements.

The study also contains a 19th-century Chinese ceramic bowl intended for bloodletting. It belongs to the history of past medical procedures. Displayed with pharmaceutical apparatus, it extends the collection to equipment used beyond the preparation of medicines themselves.

The reconstructed apothecary's study contains old devices and vessels. Tablet presses and pill-making tools gave medicines a particular shape. An alembic was an apparatus for distillation: separating substances through evaporation and condensation.

Apothecaries also used mortars to grind ingredients. The museum displays metal and ceramic versions. Balances were needed to measure mass, including handheld, drawer and cabinet types. Each has a different construction.

The study also contains a Chinese ceramic bowl from the 19th century. It was used during the old practice of bloodletting. Today it is an object from medical history, displayed alongside equipment for preparing medicines.
