Horse-drawn postal carriages
Poland's only museum display of original postal stagecoaches, complemented by postilion uniforms and milestone posts.
Lingua dei contenuti
The two stagecoaches have eleven and twenty-four seats. Their different capacities show the range of vehicles used for horse-drawn postal transport. They were built for the postal service, which also carried passengers over long distances in the 19th century. The Wrocław exhibition is Poland's only museum display of original postal stagecoaches. Alongside the passenger vehicles stands a postal van that was not used to carry people.
Another part of the collection concerns the staff. It includes the clothing of postal officials who drove the coaches and equipment used by postilions. Among these objects is a coach clock, one of two in Poland. Milestones, serving a role comparable to modern road signs, add to the transport theme.
Other objects tell us about the passengers: old suitcases, trunks and small belongings taken on journeys. Passenger luggage and the staff's clothing and equipment offer two perspectives on the same trip. The display brings together the vehicles, the objects used to operate the service and the possessions of its customers. Its largest exhibits are linked by subject to things that would fit inside a traveller's luggage.
