L’oggetto

The botanical display “The World of Plants” includes nearly 500 species from different geographical regions. It was created entirely from the university Herbarium, a collection used to document and study plants. The exhibition makes a selection of these scientific resources accessible to visitors. Specimens are arranged systematically by groups of organisms, rather than as a reconstruction of one landscape. The historically broad scope of botany also includes algae, fungi and lichens here, followed by bryophytes and the main groups of seed plants.

Colourful panels with flower diagrams accompany the families of flowering plants. The drawings explain their structure and help visitors compare the groups represented by specimens. The specimen preserves natural material; the diagram organises its features. Larger exhibits include a welwitschia trunk and a cycad stem. There is also a collection of gymnosperm cones and a small palm collection that includes a coco de mer fruit. Alongside typical herbarium material, the display therefore contains large plant parts with clearly three-dimensional forms.

“The World of Plants” brings together nearly 500 species from different parts of the world. The specimens come from the university Herbarium, a collection of material that scientists use to study and compare plants.

The exhibits are divided into groups. They also include algae, fungi and lichens, traditionally studied within the broad field of botany. Colourful panels show how flowers are built. Larger plant parts include a welwitschia trunk, a cycad stem, different cones and a coco de mer fruit. A botanical specimen need not be a thin, dried stalk: it can also be a large fruit or part of a trunk.
