L’oggetto

The Mercedes-Benz L 3000 was a truck with a three-tonne payload, manufactured between 1938 and 1943. It was powered by a 4.849-litre OM 65 diesel engine rated at 75 metric horsepower. Drive reached the rear wheels through a five-speed gearbox. The rear axle had twin wheels, while the suspension used leaf springs.

The truck’s unladen weight was about 4.03 tonnes and its wheelbase measured 3.8 metres. It was equipped with hydraulic brakes. The museum’s vehicle underwent months of restoration to return it to working order and has been used at events and in film productions. Within a military vehicle collection, it represents transport work: payload, chassis design and propulsion matter here, rather than armament specifications. Comparing its own weight with its three-tonne load conveys the scale of a truck whose engine, suspension and rear wheels had to support both the vehicle and its cargo.

The army needed trucks to carry loads. The Mercedes L 3000 could carry three tonnes, or 3,000 kilograms. The empty vehicle itself weighed about four tonnes. Its engine and wheels therefore had to move both the truck and everything loaded onto it.

Power went to the rear wheels through a gearbox with five forward gears. The rear axle used twin wheels: wheels placed in pairs beside one another. It had a diesel engine, meaning it ran on diesel fuel. Its suspension used leaf springs, and its brakes were hydraulic.

This model was made between 1938 and 1943. The museum’s truck was restored over many months to return it to working order. Afterwards, it was used at events and in film productions. Seeing it alongside tanks introduces another part of military technology: a vehicle whose main job was carrying heavy loads.
