The SM-1 is among the helicopters displayed at the Armaments Museum. It is the Polish licence-built version of the Soviet Mi-1. The production agreement was signed in 1954. Manufacturing this family of rotorcraft connected its history with Poland’s aviation industry. Production started in Świdnik in 1956, followed the next year by the SM-1/300 series. Further versions were developed for different purposes. The last SM-1 was built in December 1965, ending almost a decade of production of this family in Poland.

Helicopters of this type served in liaison and reconnaissance roles. There were also dual-control training versions and medical versions fitted with external pods. Different equipment allowed the same basic design to be used for transport, pilot training and medical assistance. The SM-1 family used a radial piston engine, rather than a jet engine. Its main rotor had three blades. Compared with the collection’s jet aircraft, it illustrates two different methods of propulsion: turning a rotor and producing jet thrust.

The SM-1 is a helicopter. It was a Polish version of the Mi-1, built under licence. A licence gives permission to manufacture someone else’s design. In Poland, these machines were built in Świdnik. Production began in 1956 and the last SM-1 was completed in December 1965.

Helicopters in this family supported communications and reconnaissance. Versions were also developed for teaching pilots and carrying sick people. The medical version used external pods. A three-bladed rotor turned above the fuselage. It was powered by a piston engine with cylinders arranged like the points of a star. This was different from a jet aircraft’s engine. Different SM-1 versions were adapted for different tasks.
