Tübingen Bible
A German-language Bible printed in 1729, containing both Testaments and bound in leather with decorative metal fittings.
Lingua dei contenuti
This Bible was published in Tübingen in 1729. The Old and New Testaments were brought together in one volume. Its language is German, in keeping with Martin Luther's call for the Scriptures to be published in readers' native languages. Hence the name "Luther's Bible", which here refers to an 18th-century edition, not a book dating from the reformer's lifetime.
The leather binding is complemented by richly decorated metal corners and clasps. Metal appears both at the edges of the cover and in the fittings that close the volume. The ornamental fittings are as specific a feature of this copy as its place and date of publication. When examining the book, you can compare the two binding materials: the leather surface and the metal decorations at the corners.
