Marian Column
A seventeenth-century statue on a tall column in front of the abbey’s main buildings.
Lingua dei contenuti
The Marian Column of 1670 predates the great Baroque rebuilding of the abbey’s main complex, which began in the following decade. The figure was made by Matthäus Knote, a sculptor from Legnica. The image of Mary stands on a slender Corinthian column set on a tall, substantial pedestal. A balustrade surrounds the monument, separating it from the surrounding square.
The column stands at a fork in the roads among avenues lined with horse chestnut trees. To the east, the square is enclosed by a 223-metre façade linking the Abbots’ Palace, the church and the monastic wing. The former brewery and bakery stand to the south, while the Church of St James and buildings associated with the abbey’s services are on the western side. The elevated figure of Mary provides a distinct sculptural feature against the extensive group of buildings. This is an outdoor point: exploring it does not imply that the entire square or neighbouring buildings are interiors included in the daily visiting programme.

The Marian Column is a tall column carrying a statue of Mary. It was made in 1670, before the great Baroque rebuilding of the abbey’s main buildings began. Matthäus Knote, a sculptor from Legnica, made the figure. The column stands on a large pedestal and is surrounded by a balustrade.
The monument is set at a fork in the roads on the monastery square. Horse chestnut avenues run nearby. On one side stretches a long façade joining the Abbots’ Palace, the church and the monastery. On other sides stand the former brewery, bakery and Church of St James. The column helps make the layout of this space clear: it is a single tall sculpture among many large buildings. It is viewed outdoors.
