Stoneworking workshop
A reconstructed workshop for making stone axes and dugout boats.
Lingua dei contenuti
The reconstructed workshop for making stone axes and dugout boats brings together two related activities: producing tools and working wood. A dugout is a boat hollowed from a tree trunk. The park recreates a workplace, while finds recovered during excavations provide evidence of the inhabitants’ actual activities.
In a workshop uncovered in 1986, archaeologists found 12 stone axes and fragments of several grinding slabs. These slabs were used to work stone. Tools together with working surfaces identify a workshop, rather than simply a spot where someone lost a single object.
The finds also included dozens of stones bearing traces of working, interpreted as possible unfinished products. They represent a stage between raw material and a finished object; not every worked stone necessarily became a completed tool.
Working stone and wood was connected with the settlement's waterside setting. Excavations also revealed a landing place with surviving wooden reinforcements. The workshop and landing place are separate discoveries that add to our knowledge of boatmaking and use of the shore.
The outdoor reconstructions and viewpoint are accessible all year, 24 hours a day.

A stone axe began as a piece of raw material. It had to be shaped. The reconstructed workshop in the park introduces the making of axes and dugout boats. A dugout is made by hollowing out a tree trunk.
In an ancient workshop discovered by archaeologists in 1986, 12 stone axes were found. There were also pieces of grinding slabs and many stones with marks left by working. Some may have been unfinished products. Finds like these help researchers identify places where tools were made.
Stone tools and boats were part of life beside the water. Remains of a landing place reinforced with timber were also discovered at the settlement. This was a separate find, connected with using the shore. The workshop in the park is a modern reconstruction. It helps explain work whose traces survived in the ground.
