L’oggetto

The model depicts Książ Castle in Wałbrzych, a residence enlarged over several centuries. The original began as a fortress for Duke Bolko I the Strict in the late 13th century. Its position on a rocky spur helped protect it. The Hochberg family took over Książ in 1509. The medieval castle gradually became a grand aristocratic home. Baroque rebuilding created ceremonial interiors, while neo-Renaissance wings were added in the early 20th century.

Terraced gardens were laid out around the residence. They replaced earlier fortifications, turning ground once used for defence into a place for walks. The castle and its gardens thus belong to different stages in the development of the same home. In 1941, the Nazis confiscated Książ. Wartime building work damaged its historic interiors. The monument represented in Kowary has a history encompassing both aristocratic life and this traumatic period.

Książ is a castle in Wałbrzych, represented here in Kowary by a smaller model. The first fortress was built in the late 13th century for Duke Bolko I. The Hochberg family took it over in 1509. Successive owners enlarged their home, adding wings and decorated rooms. Its appearance developed over many generations.

Terraced gardens surround the real castle, arranged on different levels of the ground. Fortifications previously stood there. During the Second World War, the Nazis took the castle from the family, and alterations destroyed some historic interiors. The model represents a monument whose owners, shape and purpose changed over the centuries.
