Volcanology
Geological specimens and digital explanations of processes within the Earth.
Lingua dei contenuti
Volcanoes, the structure of the Earth and earthquakes are three connected themes in this part of the museum. Digital presentations introduce volcanology, geology and seismology, the study of seismic phenomena. They do not replace the physical collection: museum specimens gathered by geologist Ladislav Šimon accompany them. An object and its explanation offer two different ways of exploring the same subject.
The exhibition was modernised in 2023. The changes aimed to combine new digital content with the preservation of the specimens' value. It addresses natural processes, while the museum's other departments focus primarily on the town's history, crafts and art. It is the institution's only natural-history exhibition.
This approach reverses a familiar way of looking at the region: instead of beginning with buildings and manufactured objects, it begins with the ground and geological processes. A physical specimen can be compared with a digital explanation of its wider context. Each has a different role: the collection preserves material evidence, while the presentation helps organise ideas about volcanoes, geology and seismic activity.
