BRDM-1 reconnaissance vehicle
An armoured reconnaissance vehicle with a front-mounted engine and amphibious capability.
Lingua dei contenuti
The BRDM-1 in the Fort No. 9 collection is an armoured reconnaissance vehicle. Reconnaissance involves gathering information about terrain and conditions to support the operations of friendly forces. Its role therefore differed from that of a tank or the SKOT WPT technical recovery vehicle in the same collection.
In the BRDM-1, the engine is at the front of the hull, beneath an armoured cover. The driver sat on the left and the commander on the right. The chassis had two axles and four-wheel drive. The design was also amphibious, with a water jet at the rear propelling it through water.
These features describe the BRDM-1 type. They do not indicate whether the museum vehicle is operational today or whether driving or swimming demonstrations are available during a visit.
The museum allows visitors to enter the vehicle’s accessible interior. Check current availability before entering and follow museum rules. Children should visit with an accompanying adult.

The BRDM-1 was used for reconnaissance: checking the terrain and gathering information for the military. It had an armoured hull. At the museum, its role can be compared with that of the SKOT WPT: one vehicle gathered information, while the other helped repair damaged armoured carriers.
The BRDM-1’s engine was at the front, beneath an armoured cover. The driver sat on the left and the commander on the right. The vehicle had two axles, with power delivered to all four wheels. Its design also allowed it to cross water. When swimming, it was propelled by a jet of water expelled through a device at the rear of the hull.
This explains how the vehicle type worked. It does not mean that the museum example is currently ready to drive or swim. Access to the interior also depends on what the museum is making available at the time.
