From the Gothic Crucifixion Group to Willmann’s Baroque paintings: works from the National Museum in Wrocław.
Lingua dei contenuti
The monumental fifteenth-century Crucifixion Group comes from St Elizabeth's Church in Wrocław. Alongside Gothic works, the display includes an early sixteenth-century altarpiece depicting the Adoration of the Magi, from the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Wojanów.
The Renaissance is represented by Protestant epitaphs, mainly from Wrocław, and sixteenth-century portraits. The Baroque paintings include works by Michael Leopold Willmann. Sculpture from the first half of the eighteenth century is represented by Thomas Weissfeld and Johann Christoph Königer, as well as Johann Georg Urbanski and Johann Jacob Bauer, who worked under the influence of art from Prague.
The juxtaposition of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque art illustrates changes associated with humanism, the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation. The works belong to the National Museum in Wrocław, and the Brzeg display complements that museum's gallery of medieval and early modern art.
