Fallow deer
Two colour varieties in one zoo, and antlers that males renew every year.
Jazyk obsahu
Akcent ZOO has kept fallow deer in two colour varieties: fawn and almost white, or leucistic. The latter is not the same as albinism. Different colours within one species are therefore part of the local collection's history, rather than a reason to regard the animals as separate species.
A male fallow deer carries antlers that grow again each year. The female is called a doe and the young a fawn. Fallow deer live in herds, although males and females with young may form separate groups. Herd organisation changes with the animals' stage of life.
They often feed at dawn and dusk and spend much of the rest of the day resting. Their food includes grasses, herbs, acorns, leaves, buds, shoots and bark. The mix varies with the season and what is available.
A doe hides her fawn in dense undergrowth and returns several times a day. The male does not take part in its care.
In the Białystok enclosure, old broadleaved trees provide shade and places to rest, preserved as part of the animals' surroundings.
Pre deti
Fallow deer of the same species can have different colours. Akcent ZOO has kept fawn-coloured and almost white animals. The pale ones are called leucistic. This is not the same as albinism, although both words may make you think of whiteness.
