O exponáte

Lions do not all come from Africa. The Asiatic lion lives in the forested Gir region of the Indian state of Gujarat. It is also known as the Persian lion. Its natural habitat includes woodland and scrub, and its food includes deer and smaller vertebrates. An Indian landscape is therefore the setting behind an encounter with this large cat in Kraków.

Males form small groups. They join females during breeding or at a large kill. Females look after the young: following a pregnancy of around 110 days, between one and six cubs are born. They become completely independent of their mother at about two and a half years old. Raising the cubs therefore takes much longer than pregnancy itself. The animal is included in the European EEP breeding programme. Kraków's collection allows a comparison with the Amur tiger and snow leopard, introducing three different Asian habitats of large predators.

Pre deti

Lions are often associated with Africa, but this lion comes from India. Its wild home is the wooded Gir region in the state of Gujarat. It is called the Asiatic or Persian lion. It lives in woodland and scrub, hunting deer among other prey.

Males can form small groups. They meet females during breeding or at a large kill. Females care for the lion cubs. Pregnancy lasts about 110 days, and a litter contains between one and six cubs. The young need time to become independent: they are fully independent at about two and a half years old. European zoos cooperate in breeding these lions through the EEP programme. In Kraków you are meeting a lion with an Asian story.
