Fokker Dr.I replica
A triplane connects First World War aviation with the work of local enthusiasts.
Jazyk obsahu
Three wings stacked above one another distinguish the Fokker Dr.I, a German fighter of the First World War. The museum holds a replica jointly built by Stanisław Gabryś and Jerzy Gaszyński, a journalist and enthusiast of Świdnica's history. The two men financed this first replica themselves. It records modern reconstruction work rather than being a surviving aircraft from the front.
The original type became famous as the aircraft of Manfred von Richthofen, known as the Red Baron. German interest in the triplane configuration was encouraged by the performance of the British Sopwith Triplane, particularly its manoeuvrability and rate of climb. Of the German responses to that aircraft, the Fokker Dr.I was the one built in quantity. A total of 320 original aircraft were produced, a small number compared with the familiarity of its distinctive three-wing silhouette.
Pre deti
This aircraft has three wings, stacked one above another. That was the shape of the Fokker Dr.I, a German fighter from the First World War. The museum example is a replica. This means it was built in modern times to reproduce an old aircraft. It is not a machine that has survived since that war.
Stanisław Gabryś and Jerzy Gaszyński built the replica. Gabryś founded the museum, while Gaszyński is a journalist with an interest in Świdnica's history. They paid for their work themselves. This exhibit therefore also tells us about people who reconstruct old designs.
The original Fokker Dr.I was known as the aircraft flown by Manfred von Richthofen, nicknamed the Red Baron. German designers became interested in three-wing layouts after the British Sopwith Triplane performed well. That aircraft could turn well and climb quickly. The Fokker Dr.I went into production, with 320 original aircraft built. Its three stacked wings remain its distinctive feature.
