O exponáte

The old pottery kiln dates from the workshop’s expansion by the Kartuzy Cepelia cooperative in 1954–1955. It was built as the premises were adapted for larger-scale production. Fired with wood and coal, it held around five hundred vessels of different kinds. The first firing produced a hard but unfinished ceramic piece. In the historical Necel process, this took place at approximately 800–850°C. The pieces could then be painted and glazed. A single firing did not complete a finished glazed vessel.

After glazing came a second firing, described in the workshop’s history as taking place at 900–950°C. A later electric kiln, holding several dozen pieces, was used for this stage. It differed from the large kiln in both capacity and heat source. The surviving old kiln records an earlier production method; this account does not promise that it will be fired during every visit. Today’s practical sessions still distinguish the first firing from further firing with glaze. Finished work is collected only after the entire process is complete.

Pre deti

A vessel shaped on the wheel must still go into a pottery kiln. The Necel family’s old large kiln was built during the workshop’s expansion in 1954–1955. It was heated with wood and coal and could hold about five hundred vessels.

The first firing hardened the pots. Patterns were then painted and glaze applied, followed by a second firing. A smaller electric kiln was later used for this stage. Fire and very high temperatures were as much a part of the potter’s work as the wheel and clay.

Today the old kiln tells part of the workshop’s history. A visit does not mean that the kiln will be operating. Vessels made during practical sessions must also wait for drying and firing to be completed.
