The “Young Couple” figure hive
Two figures carved from one log contain two separate beehives.

The “Young Couple”, also known as the “Squire and His Wife”, is a beehive carved from a single piece of wood. Each figure was hollowed out separately, providing two independent hives. The wooden surface was coated with a painting ground and dark brown oil paint. The object comes from Lower Silesia and dates to the seventeenth or eighteenth century. Its maker is unknown. It measures 190 centimetres high, 100 centimetres wide and 75 centimetres deep, giving this practical object the scale and outline of a large sculpture.
The man is taller than the woman beside him. He has shoulder-length hair, a carved collar, cuffs and a belt. The woman wears a pointed bonnet with folds around her face. Their joined hands form a heart, outlined by their symmetrical thumbs and touching fingers. The wooden surface is damaged. Both figures have lost their outer arms, and the front boards that closed the hives are missing. Removing those boards allowed the beekeeper to reach the honeycombs. The lost elements thus belonged both to the sculpted figures and to the working beehives.
