Alchemist's Workshop

A reconstructed workshop presents the equipment and experiments that preceded modern chemistry.

O exponáte

This reconstruction of a medieval alchemical workshop presents the setting for early experiments with substances. Alchemy was taught at universities. Its practitioners sought, among other things, to turn metals into gold and discover an elixir of eternal youth. These were ambitions, not accomplished results.

Everyday experiments nevertheless produced practical skills. Alchemists developed the manufacture of inks, dyes and paints. They also worked on ore processing, glassmaking, leather tanning, extracts and tinctures. Their work connected the study of matter with crafts needed beyond the workshop itself.

Methods of purifying substances were important for pharmacy: distillation, sublimation and crystallisation. Such experiments used water baths, distillation flasks, condensers and receiving vessels. Some of these names remain in use in chemical laboratories. The reconstructed workshop therefore places an early understanding of the world alongside tools and processes that became part of later laboratory practice.

Pre deti

This workshop was reconstructed to show what a medieval alchemist's workplace might have looked like. Alchemists studied substances. Their subject was even taught at universities. They searched for a way to turn metals into gold and for an elixir of eternal youth. Having these ambitions did not mean they achieved them.

Their experiments did help real crafts develop, including making paints, ink and glass. They also improved methods of purifying substances. They used equipment called flasks, condensers, receiving vessels and water baths. Some of those names are still used in modern laboratories. The museum connects early investigations with the history of equipment for studying matter.
