Water-lily basin
Hardy water-lily varieties and other aquatic plants.
Jazyk obsahu
A basin containing water lilies lies in the ornamental part of the garden, surrounded by beds of daylilies, tulips and irises. The collection contains more than 100 water-lily varieties capable of overwintering in the local climate. This display is separate from the main pond, which is a former arm of the Oder. Flowers come in shades of white, pink, yellow and red. They also differ in how they are held: some newer American varieties raise their flowers above the water. The collection presents garden varieties alongside aquatic and marsh plants.
Arrowheads grow nearby, including common and Japanese arrowhead. Marsh plant varieties with unusual foliage are also displayed, including striped bulrushes and variegated cattails and sweet flag. Differences between varieties can therefore be seen outside the flowering season too. Two smaller, shallow basins adjoin the large one, containing rarer marsh plants and their varieties. Separate growing areas accommodate different cultivation requirements. The display combines flowering water lilies with plants of the water’s edge, and its appearance follows the seasonal development of the plants.

Water lilies grow in a basin in the ornamental part of the garden. More than 100 varieties have been collected here, all able to overwinter in the local climate. Their flowers come in shades of white, pink, yellow and red.
Some American varieties hold their flowers above the water. Arrowheads and marsh plants grow around them. Some varieties have striped or patterned leaves, so they look different even when they are not flowering.
Beside the large basin are two smaller pools with rarer wetland plants. Beds of tulips, irises and daylilies surround the aquatic collection, changing colour through the season.
