Eurasian lynx

A long-legged cat with a short tail, facial ruff and black ear tufts.

O exponáte

The Eurasian lynx combines long legs with a short, thick tail. The tail has a blunt end and a black tip. Its round feline head carries triangular ears topped with dark tufts of hair. These tufts measure about four to five centimetres and are among the predator’s most recognisable features.

The back can range from greyish yellow to dark reddish brown. The underside is much paler, white or cream. Many lynxes have dark spots, blotches or streaks on their flanks and legs, but not every animal is equally heavily marked. Coat pattern alone cannot tell us whether a lynx comes from mountains or lowlands: differently marked individuals occur in both environments.

The fur is long and soft. In winter, males develop particularly noticeable cheek ruffs, making the head appear broader at the sides. Their paws carry strongly curved claws that can be extended. A single silhouette thus brings together several contrasting details: long limbs, a broad-looking head and a short tail with a dark tip.

Pre deti

A lynx has black tufts on its ears. These are hairs, not little horns. Its ears are triangular, its head is round and its legs are long. The short tail looks quite different from many pet cats’ tails: it is thick and has a black tip.

Lynx fur can be greyer or more reddish. The belly stays paler. Spots often mark the sides and legs, but some lynxes have more than others. Spots alone do not tell us whether an animal comes from mountains or lowlands.

In winter, males have a noticeable ruff of longer hair around their cheeks. Strong, curved claws are hidden in their paws. A lynx can extend them; while it rests quietly, they may remain out of sight.
