White-handed gibbon

Swinging arms and carrying calls mark an ape from tropical treetops.

O exponáte

The white-handed gibbon’s way of travelling has a name: brachiation. The animal hangs from its forelimbs, then alternately moves its hands between supports. Its body swings like a pendulum. This form of movement suits life in the upper branches of a tropical forest. Gibbons can also cross gaps between branches with leaps reaching 9-12 metres.

This is one of the smallest apes. Its body measures around 60 centimetres, it weighs 4-8 kilograms and it has no tail. Its food includes fruit, young leaves and buds, as well as birds, chicks and eggs. The treetops are therefore both a place to travel and a place to find a varied diet.

Gibbons form family groups usually containing two to six animals. They announce their presence in a territory with loud, prolonged calls. At first, the mother does most of the caring for an infant. As it grows, the father takes over some of that care. Pregnancy lasts around seven months. This small ape combines agile movement high above the ground with close family relationships.

Pre deti

A gibbon moves between branches a little like a pendulum. It hangs from its hands, takes hold of another support and swings forward. This way of moving is called brachiation. Gibbons live high in tropical forest trees, where that skill is very useful.

They have no tail. They are apes, although much smaller than many other members of that group. A gibbon weighs around 4-8 kilograms. It eats fruit, young leaves and buds, but also birds and their eggs.

Gibbons live in families, usually with two to six animals. Loud calls announce that their territory is occupied. A mother does most of the caring for a very young gibbon. As the youngster grows, its father takes over some of the care. Family life therefore involves both a shared territory and looking after the young.
