O exponáte

The jaguar is the largest cat in the Americas. Its natural range includes Central America and much of South America. The Amazon basin and the Pantanal wetlands are important areas where it occurs. Powerful limbs, broad paws and a heavily muscled body distinguish it from the more slender leopard, with which it is sometimes confused. Males are generally larger and heavier than females.

A jaguar’s yellowish or reddish-brown coat bears dark rosettes. These often contain an additional central spot, a useful distinction from the leopard. The coat pattern makes the cat’s outline harder to see among plants. Jaguars use this cover when approaching prey and waiting for the right moment to strike.

Water is no obstacle: jaguars swim extremely well and often stay near rivers or lakes. Their varied diet includes mammals, birds, fish and reptiles. They usually live alone. They are most often active at dusk and at night, although they may also hunt by day. Females raise their young without help from males, and growing cubs stay with their mothers for a long time while learning to live independently.

The jaguar is the largest cat in the Americas. It has powerful paws and a sturdy body. In the wild it lives in places such as Central America, the Amazon basin and the Pantanal wetlands.

Its fur has dark, ring-like markings called rosettes. There is often a small spot inside them. This detail helps distinguish a jaguar from a similar-looking leopard. The markings also make the cat harder to see among plants.

Jaguars swim very well. They hunt near rivers and lakes, and may eat fish and reptiles. They usually live alone and attack from ambush. They are most active in the evening and at night, but can find food during the day too. Mothers care for the cubs, which stay with them until they have learned to manage on their own.
