The Soviet Field Hospital
After the front passed through in the summer of 1944, a Soviet field hospital operated at the site for four months.
Jazyk obsahu
In the summer of 1944, German forces evacuated the Stępina headquarters as the Red Army approached. The front line remained in the area from 3 to 29 August. It then moved about 15 kilometres west, leaving the former command complex on the Soviet side.
A field hospital operated here for around four months. It was not confined to a single room inside the concrete shelter: it used its own tents as well as auxiliary buildings left by the Germans. Facilities built to support a military headquarters were now used to care for wounded soldiers.
The hospital’s presence followed the position of the front, rather than the shelters’ original purpose. When another offensive began in January 1945, it moved west with the advancing troops. It did not become a permanent medical institution at Stępina.
