O exponáte

Resurfacing work near the University of Wrocław’s Institute of Archaeology revealed a collection of military helmets. They were found on Koszarowa Street, on the grounds of the former barracks of the 8th Signals Battalion. An outbuilding stood at the discovery site until 1945. Archaeologists associate its destruction with the likely moment when the helmets became buried.

The collection is varied. It includes German models from both world wars, a Polish wz. 31 helmet and a Soviet SSh-36. Their different shapes belong to different periods and systems of equipment. The museum displays a collection of 65 helmets.

The objects were discovered close together in a small area. Their arrangement led researchers to suggest that they had previously been stored on a shelf. This is a hypothesis based on the positions of the finds, rather than a surviving piece of furniture. The collection connects the city’s military past with archaeological work, in which an object’s location and the circumstances of its discovery also carry meaning.

Pre deti

During resurfacing work on Koszarowa Street, workers found many helmets. They lay just below the ground near the university’s Institute of Archaeology. Military barracks once occupied this site. An outbuilding stood where the helmets were found, but it was destroyed in 1945. Researchers think the helmets may have become buried at that time.

The museum collection contains 65 helmets. They include German models from the First and Second World Wars, a Polish wz. 31 and a Soviet SSh-36. Each model is a different design of protective headgear. Their shapes help researchers identify where they came from.

The helmets were found close together. Archaeologists think they might once have been stored on a shelf, but not every question has a definite answer. Researchers compare the objects and their positions to reconstruct carefully what happened inside the former building.
