A historic castle gate built in 1687 and preserved unchanged to this day.
Jazyk obsahu
The Gate of the Chosen, also called the Guardhouse, was built in 1687 by the builder Consilio Milius for the then Pszczyna magnate, Baltazar Promnitz. It was built on the site of a fifteenth-century guardhouse with a drawbridge over the moat, and remains the oldest part of the castle complex preserved in unchanged form.
The Wybrańcy, the castle's guards, stood watch at the gate and on the nearby bridge over the Młynówka stream that links the castle grounds to the town's central market square, without interruption until 1875.
The gate was built of plastered brick as a single-storey structure under a tri-pitched tiled roof. Its facade still bears the coats of arms of Baltazar Erdmann von Promnitz and his wife Emilia Agnieszka Saska, and the year of construction was also encoded in a Latin chronogram, whose selected letters, read as Roman numerals, spell out 1687. The gate was entered in the register of historic monuments in 1932, with the listing renewed in 1966; until 2020 it housed the "Café u Telemanna" and the Tourist Information Office, and earlier still, until the 19th century, it stood next to a brewery, a malthouse and a bakery.
