Snow leopard
A long tail, broad paws and thick fur equip this cat for life in rocky mountains.
Jazyk obsahu
A snow leopard uses its tail to maintain balance as it moves across steep, rocky slopes. When resting, it can also wrap the tail around its body for warmth. This cat inhabits the high mountains of Asia, including the Himalayas and Altai. Such rugged terrain demands skilful movement between rocks rather than running across an open plain.
Thick, pale fur marked with dark rosettes provides warmth and camouflage. Small, rounded ears help reduce heat loss. Broad paws work like snowshoes, making movement through snow easier, while powerful hind limbs aid jumping. Each detail meets a different challenge of mountain life: cold, snow or uneven ground.
The snow leopard is most active at dawn and dusk and usually lives alone. It hunts mountain ungulates, marmots and birds. When wild prey becomes scarce, attacks on livestock and conflicts with herders become more frequent. Poaching is another threat. Protecting this predator requires safeguarding the wider mountain ecosystem, including populations of the animals that provide its food.

Thick fur protects it from the cold. Pale colouring and dark markings help it blend into the rocks. Small ears lose less heat, while broad paws make walking on snow easier. Powerful back legs are useful for jumping.
This cat usually lives alone. It prefers to hunt at dawn and dusk, catching mountain ungulates, marmots or birds. Its prey needs protection too: when wild food is scarce, it may attack farm animals and come into conflict with people. Poachers also pose a threat.
