An Asian elephant's pregnancy lasts around 21 months. Usually a single calf is born, already weighing as much as 100 kilograms. Its long development before birth and the size of the newborn set this resident of Kraków Zoo apart from the other mammals on the route. Wild Asian elephants inhabit southern and south-eastern Asia, living in dense forests as well as open grasslands and scrub.
Their diet consists of plants: grass, leaves, soft shoots and fruit. It therefore includes different types of food from different layers of vegetation. Elephants live in herds led by an older female. Kraków Zoo participates in the European EEP breeding programme for this species. Meeting an elephant brings together the observation of a large herbivore and the story of an animal involved in international cooperation between zoos.
