O exponátu

Cooper’s tools are displayed alongside examples of the craft’s products. A cooper assembled wooden vessels from staves and secured them with hoops. The tools include devices for holding wood still, cutting grooves and fitting the parts that bind the completed vessel. One of the devices is a shaving horse, used to grip wood during shaping. Holding the material steady allowed the craftsperson to work its surface with a tool.

Crozes cut a groove into the staves. Their task differed from that of the shaving horse: they shaped the wood rather than simply holding it. Different tools therefore belonged to different stages of working the same material. Pincers and clamps were used to fit hoops around vessels that had already been assembled. The hoops enclosed the prepared staves. The museum’s group includes tools for working individual parts as well as joining them together. The finished vessels displayed beside them show the result of those successive operations.

Pro děti

A cooper made wooden vessels from staves, or separate shaped pieces of wood, held together by hoops. The exhibition shows finished vessels and tools used to make them. Each tool had a different job.

A shaving horse held the wood steady during shaping. A croze cut a groove into a stave. Pincers and clamps helped fit hoops around the assembled vessel. These objects show the work in stages: first the parts were prepared, then they were joined. Finished vessels are displayed alongside the tools used for those tasks.
