BAT-M

This tracked engineering vehicle built roads and cleared obstacles.

O exponátu

The broad blade indicates the main role of the BAT-M: working on roads and clearing obstacles. The vehicle was used to establish routes, level terrain, clear obstructions and snow, and prepare positions. It was built on the chassis of the AT-T heavy tracked tractor. Its equipment also included a crane with a two-tonne lifting capacity.

The BAT-M weighed 27.5 tonnes and had a crew of two. Its twelve-cylinder, 415-metric-horsepower engine was liquid-cooled. Maximum road speed was 35 km/h, while working speeds ranged from 1.5 to 16 km/h. These figures distinguish travelling from carrying out a task: moving earth and crossing difficult ground were central to its role. The blade and crane combined several engineering capabilities on one chassis, from preparing a passage to lifting heavy components.

Pro děti

The broad part at the front of the BAT-M is its blade, used for moving earth and clearing obstacles. This tracked machine helped make roads, level ground and clear snow. Armies therefore needed vehicles that did jobs similar to those we see on building sites.

The BAT-M was built on the chassis of a heavy AT-T tractor. Besides its blade, it had a crane that could lift up to two tonnes. The blade and crane had different jobs: one pushed material, while the other raised heavy objects. The whole machine weighed 27.5 tonnes and was operated by two people.

Its engine had twelve cylinders and was cooled by liquid. When travelling along a road, the vehicle could reach 35 kilometres per hour. While working, it moved more slowly, between 1.5 and 16 kilometres per hour. Digging, levelling and pushing earth required a different pace from simply driving.
