O exponátu

The Amur tiger inhabits mountain coniferous and mixed forests, often near rivers. Its environment can be bitterly cold, with temperatures falling below minus 40 degrees Celsius. It has a layer of fat about five centimetres thick on its belly and around the groin. This is one of the body’s adaptations to conditions in a cold forest. The predator feeds on large vertebrates.

It most often hunts in the morning and evening, when there is less light than at midday. Its pupils are round, unlike the vertical pupils of a domestic cat. In dim light, a tiger’s eyesight works much better than a human’s. A river is not an impassable barrier. Tigers swim well and readily bathe, while young animals may play in the water.

Males are noticeably larger than females: a large male may weigh about 300 kilograms, compared with around 170 for a female. Pregnancy lasts roughly 105 days. Even at rest, the tiger has the build of an animal adapted to taking large prey. Its life combines forest hunting with confident swimming.

Pro děti

This tiger comes from forests where winter can be very cold. It lives among coniferous and mixed woodland, often close to rivers. On its belly and around its groin, a layer of fat helps it cope with the cold. That layer can be about five centimetres thick.

Tigers most often hunt in the morning and evening. In dim light they see much better than people. Their pupils are round, rather than narrow and vertical like a domestic cat’s. This big cat feeds on large animals with backbones.

Tigers are also good swimmers. They readily enter water, and young tigers play while bathing. A male is larger than a female and can weigh around 300 kilograms. That makes a very heavy swimmer, yet one that is comfortable in the water.
