Snow leopard
A long tail and broad paws equip this cat for the mountains of Asia.
Jazyk obsahu
The snow leopard’s long, bushy tail helps it balance on steep slopes. When resting, it can also use the tail to shield its body from cold. Broad paws spread its weight over snow, while powerful hind legs help it leap between rocks. Its entire shape reflects the demands of mountain life.
Also known as the irbis, the snow leopard inhabits Asian mountains, including the Himalayas. It uses rocky shelters and rests in protected places. In winter it may descend to lower elevations, following the animals it hunts. This is not a cat of dense tropical forests: its habitat includes rocky slopes, mountain meadows and areas with sparse vegetation.
The pale coat carries dark spots and rosettes, which are ring-shaped markings. Winter fur becomes longer and thicker, while small, rounded ears limit heat loss. Protecting this predator requires preserving its mountain habitat. Other animals sharing those slopes benefit as well. In a resting snow leopard, the tail creates particularly striking proportions, looking much longer than one might expect for a cat of this body size.

The snow leopard, also called the irbis, lives in the mountains of Asia. It needs ways to cope with cold and steep rocks. Broad paws, strong back legs and a very long tail all help.
The tail makes balancing easier. At rest, it can also wrap around the body like a furry scarf. Wide paws spread the animal’s weight across snow. Thicker winter fur protects it from cold, and small ears lose less heat.
Dark spots and rings called rosettes mark the pale coat. Snow leopards use rocky shelters. In winter they sometimes move lower down after their prey. Protecting their mountain habitat also helps other animals living there. Compare the tail with the rest of the body: it is an important part of this mountain cat’s equipment.
