Über das Objekt

The font was made of wood in the seventeenth century. It belongs to the church’s early furnishings and was used for baptism. Its material links it to the timber building and wooden fittings, but it has a separate purpose: to hold a vessel containing baptismal water. It has eight sides, distinguishing its outline from the six-sided pulpit basket. This polygonal shape is an important feature by which this particular furnishing can be recognised.

The font was donated by Georg von Schweinitz and his wife Anna. Their gift belongs to the history of noble benefactors who provided the church with furnishings needed by the congregation. The Schweinitz name also appears in the decoration of one of the private pews. The silver basin was donated in 1694, after the wooden font had been made. The wooden body and metal vessel therefore came from separate gifts. The history of this small furnishing developed in stages, just like that of the larger altar.

A font is used during baptism. Inside it is a vessel for water. The one in Jawor dates from the seventeenth century and was made of wood. It has eight sides, giving it a different shape from the pulpit basket.

Georg von Schweinitz and his wife Anna gave the font to the church. Gifts like this helped the community furnish its place of worship. The family’s name is also linked to one of the church’s private pews, separate seating areas for members of the congregation.

The silver basin was added later. It was donated in 1694. The wooden part and the vessel were therefore not necessarily made at the same time. Together, they form the furnishing used for baptism.
