Akcent ZOO
Akcent ZOO covers more than three hectares of Białystok's historic Park Konstytucji 3 Maja. Its character comes mainly from animals found in Poland: European bison, wolves, lynx, wildcats and brown bears. There are also horses, donkeys and birds. At the centre is a pond with two alder-covered islands used by waterbirds.
Work on establishing the Zwierzyniec began in 1964. Over time, the collection also included exotic animals. In 1973, cooperation with the zoo in Płock brought lions, among other species. Plans for a large new zoo away from the original site were never realised.
Redevelopment beginning in 2010 changed both the animals' living conditions and the collection's direction. More emphasis was placed on native species, including animals associated with Podlasie. Predator enclosures were grouped beside the central path, while other parts of the garden can also be explored from the perimeter path. Shelters, hiding places, trees and water form the animals' everyday surroundings.
A walk combines the sight of large herbivores with encounters with forest cats that are harder to spot. Bison, lynx and Polish Koniks draw attention to different habitats and ways of life. An animal may be resting behind plants or in a shelter; its daily rhythm does not always coincide with the moment of a visit.
For children
Inside a park in Białystok are enclosures for animals familiar from Poland's wildlife. Akcent ZOO is home to bison, wolves, lynx, wildcats and bears, among others. There are horses, donkeys and birds too. The pond has two islands with alder trees where birds can rest.
The garden has a long history. Work on setting it up began in 1964, and different animals later came to Białystok. In 1973, they even included lions from Płock. Following redevelopment that began in 2010, the collection focused mainly on the wildlife of Poland and Podlasie.
On your walk you encounter very different ways of living. Bison eat plants, lynx usually hunt alone, and wolves form families. A small pony can already be a fully grown horse. Trees, shelters, water and hiding places help animals rest, escape the weather and choose where they want to be. Some are easy to see, while others hide among the plants. Their home has quiet corners too.
