About

Arboretum w Przelewicach

The Przelewice Dendrological Garden is an arboretum in Pyrzyce County, run by the regional cultural institution Ogrody Przelewice. Visitors can explore more than 30 hectares with the garden, a classicist palace, an orangery and the buildings of a former manor farm.

The story of the place begins in 1799, when August Heinrich Borgstede of Berlin bought the estate from the von Schack family. He built the palace and laid out an English-style park. In 1821 the estate passed to Prince August of Prussia for Augusta von Prillwitz and their children, and in 1922 to Conrad von Borsig, a member of the German Dendrological Society. In 1933-1938 he transformed the park into a collection of trees and shrubs from Asia, North America and Europe.

After the war the garden changed administrators, and in 1976 the park was entered in the register of historic monuments. Its restoration was designed in 1987 by the garden's head, Henryk Chylarecki. From 1993 it was cared for by the municipality, and in 2020-2021 it was taken over by the regional government.

A walk leads past places of remembrance: the monument to the park makers, the von Prillwitz family mausoleum designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, and the memorial stones of Borsig and Chylarecki. The garden's symbol is the dove tree. The Orangery holds plants from different climate zones, live invertebrates and a reconstruction of a Neolithic hut. The tropical butterfly exhibition is temporary. The first exhibition accompanies the season opening; current dates and details are announced on the Ogrody Przelewice website.

Exhibitions at Ogrody Przelewice also include Mikołaj Gaweł’s collection of Japanese tsuba and an exhibition about Carl Ferdinand Busse in the Palace. The Concert Hall houses “The Life Story of a Locomotive”, featuring reproductions of paintings by Paul Meyerheim associated with the Borsig family. The Manor House hosts “In Tribute to Service and Remembrance”, while sculptures by Michał Batkiewicz are displayed in the Arboretum. Check the Gardens’ website for the current programme and exhibition availability before visiting.

The Palace also houses a Training and Conference Centre. It offers 17 guest rooms accommodating 65 guests, with interiors inspired by the nature of the Arboretum. Details of the rooms available for events can be found on the Ogrody Przelewice website.
