About

Centralne Muzeum Włókiennictwa w Łodzi

The Central Museum of Textiles in Łódź occupies the White Factory - a neoclassical industrial complex whose oldest buildings were constructed on the initiative of Ludwik Geyer (1805-1869), one of the pioneers of Łódź’s textile industry. It was here that the city’s first mechanised cotton spinning mill and weaving mill were established, and today the complex houses one of the largest museums in Europe devoted to textiles.

The collections include textile machinery and tools, industrial and historic fabrics, one of the world’s largest collections of contemporary textile art, and clothing documenting fashion in the 20th and 21st centuries. In 1972, the museum launched the Textile Triennial, which became an international event in 1975, while the main building houses the Machinery in Motion Hall, where visitors can see demonstrations of historic looms in operation.

An integral part of the museum is the Łódź City Culture Park - a group of eight historic structures from Łódź and its surroundings, including a reconstructed tram shelter, including the oldest of them, the wooden Church of St Andrew Bobola from Nowosolna. In 2024, the museum together with the park won the Cuda Polski poll organised by National Geographic Traveler for the Łódź Voivodeship.
