About

The Carpentry Museum, also known as the Household Museum, displays carpentry, wheelwrighting, agricultural, carting and medical tools, alongside historic household objects. The exhibits date from the 18th century to the outbreak of the Second World War. The collection therefore extends beyond carpentry to other traditional crafts, work and daily life.

One notable exhibit is an approximately 200-year-old copying lathe, used to make spokes and components for wagon wheels.

Most exhibits come from the Kashubian museum founded by Franciszek Kowalewski, who ran his own museum for 12 years, first in Prokowo and later in Strysza Buda. He amassed around 3,000 objects, some of which he later donated to Szymbark.

Kowalewski grew up in a family of craftspeople: his father and grandfather worked as carpenters and joiners. He began with woodturning. In the 1980s, he started producing furniture in the Kashubian style, decorated with burnt and coloured floral motifs. Most of it was exported to the West.
