Stolëmòwi Klawér: a record-breaking concert piano over six metres long, decorated with portraits of Polish composers.
Content language
Over six metres long and weighing around 1.8 tonnes, this piano is known as Stolëmòwi Klawér. Its Guinness World Record dates from 30 December 2010. It is an extensive musical instrument: the piano keyboard has 156 keys spanning twelve and three-quarter octaves.
Construction was supervised by master piano maker Józef Wolf of Kalisz. The instrument has a Renner hammer action and specially made bass strings. Its timbers include spruce, birch, pine, hornbeam, mahogany and bubinga. Craftspeople from different disciplines made its components: Witold Recław of Brodnica Górna built the wooden structure, while Marek Bluhm was responsible for the lacquer finish.
Portraits of six Polish composers decorate the piano's six legs: Fryderyk Chopin, Stanisław Moniuszko, Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Mieczysław Karłowicz, Karol Szymanowski and Henryk Mikołaj Górecki. The decoration links the monumental case to Polish music, with a separate portrait on each support. The legs and lids were made by UNIBUD of Wielki Klincz, run by Eryk Klatt. The instrument was intended for concert performances.
