Mementoes of Martin Rázus
Personal material relating to a writer who drew on Brezno's history and his own childhood.
Content language
Manuscript samples, published books and personal belongings form the section devoted to Martin Rázus, a Slovak writer of the interwar period. Born in Vrbica on 18 October 1888, he was connected with Brezno through his later life rather than his birthplace. Rázus combined writing with work as a Lutheran pastor and political activity, living and working in Brezno from 1930 to 1937. His books Maroško and Maroško študuje drew on his own experience, exploring childhood and school years through autobiographical writing.
The history of Brezno provided a different source of subjects, used in the novels Júlia, Odkaz mŕtvych and Krčmársky kráľ. Local history also informed the novellas Bombura and Surovcovci, bringing the town's stories into his prose. Rázus died in Brezno on 8 August 1937. The manuscript material and printed editions displayed together offer a comparison of the different forms in which his work has survived.
