Różycki Bazaar
Praga's market in miniature, with a history that extends beyond everyday shopping.
Content language
Kolejkowo's Różycki Bazaar recalls the market between Targowa, Ząbkowska and Brzeska streets. Its real history involved Julian Różycki, the landowner, and Manas Ryba, who proposed the market and later managed it. The official opening took place in 1882.
Różycki was a pharmacist, entrepreneur and social activist associated with Praga. Traders sold dairy produce, poultry, fish, clothing, books and craft products, bringing together food shopping, clothes stalls and the search for second-hand goods.
During years of shortages, the Praga stalls were associated with goods that were difficult to find elsewhere. Street food accompanied the trade: sellers and shoppers ate hot potato dumplings served in jars, a recognisable part of the bazaar's traditions.
During the Second World War, traders supplied food to wounded soldiers at Ujazdowski Hospital and helped prisoners at Pawiak. The history behind the model thus includes practical relief work carried out by people who earned their living through trade.
