Historic tunnels
The former workings of Liczyrzepa, from mineral exploration to miners' training.
Content language
In the 19th century, Liczyrzepa operated as a mine extracting fluorite and marble. Adits 9 and 9a were later used to prospect for uranium and subsequently to train miners. An exploratory working is not the same as a regular extraction site. Its purpose was to investigate a deposit, without any guarantee of finding material suitable for mining. Training gave the existing underground passages another use.
The old tunnels now accompany a display of authentic mining equipment and hand tools. The guide explains extraction techniques and the crew's daily work. Work in adit 9 took place between 1948 and 1951. This was a post-war phase of underground exploration, separate from the 19th-century extraction of fluorite.
Some workings are protected by concrete lining or steel arch supports. Where these cover the walls, the rock disappears behind the structure; exposed sections retain visible layers and fractures. Compare the lined sections with the exposed rock. The contrast shapes the interior: alongside the miners' work, you can see the geological structure to which they had to adapt their excavations.
