Miejski Ogród Zoologiczny w Łodzi
Łódź Zoo began taking shape in 1938, on a surviving piece of the old Łódź Forest beside Na Zdrowiu Park. Its earliest inhabitants included roe deer and red deer transferred from Poniatowski Park. Those beginnings are also associated with Boruta the deer, one of the animals remembered from the zoo’s early days.
The Orientarium opened in 2022, focusing on Southeast Asian animals. It changed how visitors could observe the zoo’s residents: from ground level, from above and through glass underwater. The elephant pool, crocodilian area and ocean tunnel reveal behaviour that can easily remain out of sight at a conventional enclosure. Asian elephants live here alongside Sumatran orangutans, binturongs and a sun bear.
The outdoor garden leads to other environments and continents. Giant otters show the family life of large otters, while red pandas draw attention to Asia’s mountain forests. The zoo’s history also includes specific breeding achievements: on 1 April 2026, Ketawa gave birth here to a male Sumatran orangutan, the first born in a Polish zoo.
The connection between an animal and its habitat runs through these encounters. A grasping tail, a long trunk, broad fins and a narrow snout answer different needs: finding food, moving around and raising young. Łódź Zoo brings these solutions together in its open garden and pavilions.
For children
At Łódź Zoo you will meet animals that eat, move and rest in very different ways. An elephant reaches for food with its trunk, a binturong grips a branch with its tail, and a ray moves its fins like wings. Each feature helps with a different task.
The zoo was founded in 1938. Deer were among its first residents. Much later, in 2022, the Orientarium opened with animals from Southeast Asia. It has pools, windows into the underwater world and a tunnel where fish swim above visitors.
Outside the pavilion you will find red pandas and giant otters, among other animals. In a giant otter family, older siblings help care for the youngest. Orangutan Ketawa became the mother of a young male in April 2026. As you walk with an adult, look for a feature that helps each animal in daily life. Do not feed the animals, and take photographs without flash.
