About

Miejski Ogród Zoologiczny w Płocku

On the Vistula escarpment in Płock, the zoo's history is rooted in learning through contact with nature. In 1919, teacher Maria Macieszyna was already campaigning for a nature garden for local schools. That project did not materialise, but after the war Tadeusz Borkowski returned to the idea of a collection open to residents. The zoo opened in 1951, initially displaying mainly native animals. Jan Żabiński, director of Warsaw Zoo, contributed to its design.

An exotic chapter of the garden's history has an unusual connection with books. During Operation Crocodile, Polish publications were collected for the Polish community in Argentina, while animals arrived in Płock. The arrival of Marta the alligator, later a screen star in Hydrozagadka, was linked to this initiative. Her biography gives the zoo a distinctive individual story.

Today's collection can be explored through different ways of life: from elephant and tapir trunks, through the tree-living adaptations of sloths and gibbons, to swimming penguins and the snow leopard's mountain equipment. Outdoor enclosures are complemented by pavilions housing reptiles, amphibians and fish. The zoo also participates in international zoological cooperation and breeding programmes for threatened species. Meeting an individual animal leads from its appearance to the environment it needs beyond the zoo.

For children

An animal that appeared in a film lives at Płock Zoo. She is Marta the alligator, who played Herman the crocodile in Hydrozagadka. Her journey to Płock was connected with an unusual project: people collected books for Polish communities in Argentina, while animals came to the zoo.

The zoo itself opened in 1951, on the escarpment above the Vistula. Before that, teacher Maria Macieszyna had dreamed of somewhere pupils could discover nature up close. Later, Tadeusz Borkowski helped establish the zoo, initially with animals native to Poland.

Today a walk offers a chance to compare very different inhabitants. An elephant grasps with its trunk, a giraffe reaches for leaves, a sloth hangs beneath a branch and a penguin uses its wings underwater. Each has its own way of living. The zoo also helps protect threatened species by working with other zoos. Their wild homes, from mountains to forests and coasts, matter just as much as the animals themselves.
