About

Miejski Park i Ogród Zoologiczny w Krakowie

In Wolski Forest, among Kraków's walking trails, animals from savannas, Asian mountains and South American coasts share one zoo. Kraków's Municipal Park and Zoological Garden covers around 20 hectares. A giraffe enclosure, an encounter with a red panda or a view of penguins reveals how different the natural habitats of animals seen on a single walk can be.

The collection includes mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. Its residents include Asian elephants, Asiatic lions, Amur tigers, snow leopards, ring-tailed lemurs and pygmy hippos. Each species brings a new subject: living in a herd or alone, browsing leaves or hunting, nesting on a rocky ledge or carrying young in a mother's fur.

Animal conservation has concrete examples here. Kraków Zoo participates in European breeding programmes and projects connected with returning animals to the wild. Beti, a female condor hatched here in 2021, was transferred to a centre in Chile in 2023 as part of a reintroduction programme. The zoo's woodland setting connects a walk through its collection with the trails of Wolski Forest, whose wildlife continues beyond the enclosure fences.

For children

In Kraków's Wolski Forest, a walk through animal worlds awaits. The zoo is home to creatures from distant forests, mountains, savannas and seashores. There are mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. A single walk can bring you to an elephant, a giraffe, a red panda and a Humboldt penguin.

Each animal has different habits. Elephants live in groups led by an older female. Tigers usually prefer being alone, while a baby lemur travels clinging to its mother. Penguin parents incubate their eggs together. On the route you will meet ten animals and compare their food, homes and ways of caring for their young.

The zoo also helps protect animals. A female condor called Beti hatched in Kraków in 2021. In 2023 she went to a centre in Chile as part of a programme preparing birds for a return to the wild. It is a real story linking a Kraków forest with distant South America. Wolski Forest trails run around the zoo, so trees accompany this expedition from the beginning.
