About

Muzeum Archeologiczne we Wrocławiu

The Archaeological Museum in Wrocław is housed in the City Arsenal on Antoniego Cieszyńskiego Street. It is a branch of the City Museum of Wrocław. Its permanent exhibition, “Ancient and Medieval Silesia”, occupies three floors and presents the region's history from the earliest traces of settlement to the development of medieval towns. Original objects are accompanied by reconstructions that help place them in a wider setting.

Ice Age animal bones and stone tools form the earliest part of the story. The clay ram from Jordanów Śląski introduces Neolithic representations of animals. Further subjects include Celtic crafts and clothing, rich grave goods from Zakrzów and amber from Partynice associated with long-distance exchange. Each assemblage offers a different way of understanding the past: through material, manufacturing technique, place of discovery or the arrangement of objects.

The reconstructed burial from Ługi brings together the remains of a warrior and horse with their equipment. In the medieval section, a full-size house connects vessels and tools with everyday tasks. Families can also follow a comic trail featuring Sławek. The museum offers lessons and educational activities by prior arrangement. A visit connects individual finds with wider changes in dwelling, making objects and contact between communities.

For children

At the Archaeological Museum in the City Arsenal, you will find objects older than many towns and castles. The exhibition tells the story of Silesia's former inhabitants. It begins in the Stone Age and ends in the Middle Ages, across three floors of the building.

There are mammoth and woolly rhinoceros bones, stone tools and a ram made from clay. You can also learn how Celts made vessels and fastened their clothes. Amber from Partynice recalls the journeys made by goods, while finds from Zakrzów tell us about richly furnished graves.

Some settings have been recreated to make them easier to understand. This is what a reconstruction is. You can see the arrangement of an ancient grave and a full-size house containing vessels and tools. The museum has also prepared a comic trail featuring Sławek for families. As you look around, try to identify the ancient objects and the elements that help show their surroundings.
