About

Muzeum Karkonoskie w Jeleniej Górze

The Karkonosze Museum collects objects connected with Jelenia Góra, the Jelenia Góra Valley, the Karkonosze Mountains and the Izera Mountains. At 28 Jana Matejki Street, archaeology, ethnography, history and art meet in a site comprising the museum building, architectural reconstructions and the Glass Laboratory.

The collection originated with the Riesengebirgsverein (RGV), founded in 1880. Donations from its members formed a library and a museum accessible from 1889. The present building, designed by Carl Grosser at the initiative of curator Hugo Seydel, was constructed in 1912–1914 and opened on 14 April 1914.

After the Second World War, the institution worked as a municipal museum and repository; following renovation, it was renamed the Regional Museum in 1949. It is now a local-government cultural institution maintained by the Lower Silesian regional authority. Its permanent artistic-glass exhibition brings historic Silesian and Czech glassmaking together with more than one hundred contemporary works on display, while the Glass Laboratory introduces the process of working with the material.
