Muzeum Okręgowe Ziemi Kaliskiej
The first efforts to create a museum in Kalisz were made in 1883, and on 17 May 1914 the Museum of the Kalisz Land was formed by merging the Archaeological Museum and the Regional Museum. The collections survived the burning of the city centre during the First World War, but in 1941 most of the objects were taken out of the city and never traced again. Since 1953 the museum has occupied the former provincial treasury building on Kościuszki Street, and since 1976 it has had its current name.
After a complete renovation finished in 2023, the main building houses five permanent exhibitions: archaeology, ethnography, the history of the city, art and prints, and a room devoted to Tadeusz Kulisiewicz. The collection numbers several tens of thousands of objects from Kalisz and south-eastern Greater Poland.
Its most precious exhibits include Bolesław the Brave's arrow denarius, regarded as the oldest Polish coin, the Słuszków hoard of cross denarii and a Roman sword with the swordsmith's signature. The museum also runs two branches: the Archaeological Reserve in Kalisz-Zawodzie and Maria Dąbrowska's Manor House in Russów.
