About

Muzeum Pałac w Rogalinie

The Rogalin residence was built in 1770-1776 by Kazimierz Raczyński, Grand Scribe of the Crown and later Grand Marshal of the Court. He chose the site for its picturesque position above the broad Warta valley and its proximity to Poznań. The palace, laid out "between courtyard and garden", combines baroque roots with rococo and early neoclassical features, and in the 1780s it was modernised by the royal architects Dominik Merlini and Jan Christian Kamsetzer.

Each generation left its mark. Edward Raczyński created a neo-gothic Armoury, laid out a landscape park with the oldest oaks and built a church-mausoleum. In 1910 Edward Aleksander built a publicly accessible gallery for his collection of paintings, and before the war Roger and Helena Raczyński hid much of the collection at the National Museum in Warsaw.

The museum has operated here since 1948. After renovations in 2007-2009 and 2013-2015 the palace regained the look of the Raczyński home, and in 2018 the palace complex was declared a Monument of History. Visitors see the historic interiors, the London study of the President of Poland in Exile, the gallery with Jan Matejko's "The Maid of Orléans", the coach house, the rococo garden and the park with the famous oaks Lech, Czech and Rus.
