About

In the Music Salon, painted architecture covers the walls: arcades, hanging draperies and openings onto a blue sky. This classicising decoration dates from the middle of the 19th century. Scrollwork, masks, lyres and eagles appear in strong colours. The illusion of an opening is created on a flat surface; both the architectural framework and the fabrics are painted decoration, not actual openings in the room. Among these ornaments, the lyre introduces a musical instrument that echoes the salon's name.

The Baroque seating ensemble predates the wall paintings: it was made in the early 18th century. It retains its original upholstery, hand-embroidered in petit point and gros point needlework. Architectural illusion dominates the walls, while the embroidered seats reveal a different kind of manual craftsmanship.
