The Department of Church Art

Ukrainian religious heritage: icons, early Cyrillic printed books and craftwork rescued from the region's churches.

About the exhibition

Icons, books and religious craftwork represent different forms of Ukrainian sacred art. Paintings from the 15th to 20th centuries are accompanied by early Cyrillic printed books, including the Apostolos produced by Ivan Fedorov in Lviv in 1574.

The collection grew out of efforts to rescue furnishings from churches left without care after the forced displacement of the Ukrainian population. A repository established in 1960 later became a museum department. The exhibition connects art history with the preservation of objects once used by religious communities.
